I have been eyeing the spent flower heads on the Arizona Rosewood (Vaquelinia californica) for a several weeks at least. Today a couple of them finally came in to make a small vase...

Today's vase is a potpourri of flavors from the end of May. Herbs, miniature roses, seedpods, and even chrysanthemums and one very small sunflower found their way into the mix. As did the first plume from Pennisetum setaceum rubrum and the first small spire from Perovskia.

As the roses begin to bloom, the season tips perceptibly in the direction of summer. But the heat has not yet arrived, so I am still picking handfuls of Calendula, trying to make the most of their wonderful bright colors and the abandon with which they are flowering. As well, there is sweet broom (Cytisus x spachianus) to slip into a vase, bringing its lovely scent indoors.

Of all the flowers in the garden right now, I am particularly thrilled with the Dutch Iris "Blue Magic" (see also my last post, Farewell to March). So I decided it was fair enough to clip one and build today's vase around it.

The garden is a burst of bloom right now, which gave me the chance to snip quickly this evening. As my day went otherwise than planned, I found myself in a race with the sunset and, so far as the photography was concerned, I would have to say the sunset won. But I still have a vaseful of flowers to enjoy this week, and here they are.

Worth the wait in more ways than one. I am finally getting to use flowers I have been waiting for all winter long - Calendulas planted with Monday vases in mind, Cerinthe which helpfully seeded itself into the North Border, and Tetraneuris which disappeared entirely late last year but has returned in a glory of little yellow daisies. All of these were just ready on Monday, and then I had to wait again. It does seem like a run of bad luck: a strained (sprained?) back all last week, light case of...

small sunny garden, in a vase on monday, monday vase, iavom, desert garden, amy myers, freesia, alba
Today's vase was kept quite simple in order to avoid overwhelming any of the precious flowers. They went into the smallest of my vases, the little blue handthrown bud vase.

Today's vase was a treat to do, especially as it contains flowers I've not used before. My sister offered me some of her wonderful nasturtiums, and I used quite a few.
